Description

Delicious and crispy Southern hush puppies, perfect for serving warm as a side dish or snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar (optional, or substitute with honey)
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onions
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 1/4 cup beer (optional)
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix cornmeal, flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, sugar, and black pepper.
  2. Stir in chopped onions and combine well.
  3. In a separate small bowl, whisk together milk, egg, melted butter, and beer if using.
  4. Gradually pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients. Mix gently until just combined (batter should be slightly thick; avoid overmixing).
  5. Heat oil in a deep skillet or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Using a spoon or small ice cream scoop, drop spoonfuls of batter into hot oil. Fry until golden brown, about 2–3 minutes per side.
  7. Remove hush puppies with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For a sweeter flavor, you can add honey instead of sugar.
  • Ensure the oil is hot enough before frying to achieve the perfect crispy texture.
