Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp sugar (optional, or substitute with honey)
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 cup finely chopped onions
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 egg, beaten
- 2 tbsp melted butter
- 1/4 cup beer (optional)
- Vegetable oil, for frying
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix cornmeal, flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, sugar, and black pepper.
- Stir in chopped onions and combine well.
- In a separate small bowl, whisk together milk, egg, melted butter, and beer if using.
- Gradually pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients. Mix gently until just combined (batter should be slightly thick; avoid overmixing).
- Heat oil in a deep skillet or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
- Using a spoon or small ice cream scoop, drop spoonfuls of batter into hot oil. Fry until golden brown, about 2–3 minutes per side.
- Remove hush puppies with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Serve warm.
Notes
- For a sweeter flavor, you can add honey instead of sugar.
- Ensure the oil is hot enough before frying to achieve the perfect crispy texture.
